Chelsea Issue Official Verdict on €62m Star Finally Proving His Worth

According to a report by Football Transfer on Tuesday November 3, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso believes the club are finally witnessing Romeo Lavia's true quality after the midfielder overcame his persistent injury problems and started delivering consistently impressive performances.

The Belgian international arrived at Stamford Bridge from Southampton in July 2023 for €62 million (£51m), but repeated fitness setbacks have significantly disrupted his progress since completing the transfer.

However, the 22-year-old appears to have turned an important corner this season, recently completing consecutive full matches against Liverpool and Manchester United while demonstrating his growing confidence and physical strength.

Alonso explained that Lavia is becoming stronger mentally and physically, allowing him to handle increased playing time. The midfielder completed 90 minutes against Liverpool before producing another energetic performance against United.

Speaking through Chelsea's official website, Alonso said: "Sometimes the head is more important than the legs and now his head is in a good place."

Lavia particularly impressed during Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United, registering 23 defensive contributions, more than any other player involved in the encounter.

The midfielder also provided his second career assist for Chelsea, setting up Morgan Rogers and demonstrating his growing influence in both defensive and attacking situations.

Alonso was delighted with his midfielder's recent displays, describing his performance against United as outstanding while highlighting his importance to Chelsea's overall midfield structure.

The Spaniard praised Lavia's ability to connect defensive and attacking departments, switch play effectively, make intelligent decisions and compete aggressively throughout matches.

Alonso added that the midfielder has maintained an excellent standard throughout the previous three weeks, insisting that his performances deserve significant recognition.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will hope Lavia maintains his impressive momentum when they travel to face Sunderland on Sunday, targeting another important Premier League victory.

The Blues currently occupy fourth position after collecting three victories from their previous four league matches, while Sunderland remain bottom after winning just once in nine fixtures.
