Alan Shearer Makes Bold Statement About Arsenal After Ending Anfield Wait

According to a report by Metro on Monday, November 2, 2026, former England striker Alan Shearer has praised Arsenal's defensive organisation, describing Mikel Arteta's side as the best defensive team in world football following their victory over Liverpool at Anfield.

The Gunners secured a crucial 1-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday to move to the top of the Premier League table. Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute, giving the visitors an early advantage that they managed to protect despite sustained pressure from the home side.

Liverpool pushed forward in search of an equaliser, particularly during the second half, but struggled to create clear opportunities against Arsenal's well-organised defence. The hosts managed only one shot on target throughout the encounter.

Arsenal's defensive record has been impressive this season, with the reigning champions conceding just 10 goals in 15 matches. Shearer was particularly impressed with the collective effort displayed by Arteta's players, insisting that their defensive strength comes from the entire team rather than only the back four.

The former Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers striker highlighted how every Arsenal player contributed when Liverpool increased the pressure, adding that their determination to preserve a clean sheet demonstrated the strong team spirit within the squad.

Shearer also praised Arteta's management during the difficult moments of the contest, noting that the Arsenal manager remained composed and continued to trust his players even when Liverpool were pushing hard for an equaliser.

Former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott also praised the defensive performance, believing the team's organisation could make them difficult to stop in the Premier League title race this season.

Walcott pointed out that restricting Liverpool to just one shot on target demonstrated Arsenal's quality and commitment to defending as a unit.

He also highlighted the willingness of Arsenal's attacking players to contribute defensively, explaining that their attitude represents an important change from previous teams he had played in.

According to Walcott, winning championships requires contributions from every department, with clean sheets depending on the commitment of players across the pitch.

Meanwhile, former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman acknowledged Arsenal's superiority on the day, although he felt Liverpool showed sufficient effort and enthusiasm despite failing to find an equaliser.

The victory was particularly significant for Arsenal as it represented their first win at Anfield in 14 years. Arteta's side will now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they are scheduled to face Slavia Prague, while Liverpool prepare for their trip to Fenerbahce.
