According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Coventry City secured a much-needed 3-1 victory over Sunderland in their Premier League clash at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Frank Lampard's team took the lead in the 17th minute when Tatsuhiro Sakamoto produced a fine left-footed finish from outside the penalty area to beat Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs. The home side continued to look dangerous going forward and doubled their advantage in the 37th minute after Taiwo Awoniyi took advantage of a mistake from Luke O'Nien to find the back of the net.
Sunderland tried to fight their way back into the contest, but Coventry remained the more dangerous side and made it 3-0 just seven minutes after the restart. Jack Rudoni was the goalscorer in the 52nd minute, with Victor Torp providing the assist before his effort took a deflection on its way into the net.
The visitors eventually got a goal back in the 67th minute after VAR awarded them a penalty for handball against Ethan Pinnock. Enzo Le Fée stepped up and calmly sent Carl Rushworth the wrong way to reduce the deficit.
Sunderland pushed forward in search of another goal, but Coventry defended their advantage well, while Omar Alderete was sent off in the 90th minute after receiving a second yellow card.
The victory lifts Lampard's Coventry City out of the relegation zone into 16th position with nine points, while Sunderland remain rock bottom of the Premier League table following another disappointing result.
