According to a report by Football London on Tuesday October 27, 2026, Xabi Alonso is preparing for his 11th game as Chelsea manager, with Wednesday’s Carabao Cup encounter against Liverpool at Anfield becoming an important test as pressure continues to build.
Chelsea currently occupy fifth place in the Premier League, having won four of their opening eight matches. However, three defeats, including their disappointing home loss to Tottenham, have raised concerns.
Although Chelsea showed determination against Arsenal, their defeat to Brentford was particularly disappointing. However, the recent 2-0 loss against Tottenham proved difficult to accept for supporters, increasing scrutiny of Alonso’s management.
Former England striker Gary Lineker previously suggested that Alonso should not face immediate pressure following the Brentford defeat. Nevertheless, he warned that repeated performances of that nature would eventually place the Chelsea manager under serious examination.
Meanwhile, Como manager Cesc Fabregas continues to emerge as a potential alternative should Chelsea eventually decide to reconsider their managerial position.
Despite the growing speculation, there is currently little indication that Chelsea’s ownership, Clearlake Capital, intends to abandon its long-term project with Alonso. The club remains involved in the Carabao Cup and occupies a Champions League qualification position in the Premier League.
According to TalkSPORT, however, Chelsea could have alternative managerial candidates in mind should results deteriorate significantly. Fabregas remains one possible option, having attracted interest from Stamford Bridge before Alonso’s appointment.
The former Chelsea midfielder has continued to impress in Italy, with Como performing strongly under his leadership. Their impressive 4-1 Champions League victory against Manchester United and current position inside Serie A’s top four have further enhanced his reputation.
Chelsea are reportedly monitoring the progress of their former midfielder as his managerial career continues to develop.
Alonso’s difficulties have also been influenced by injuries to several important players. Emiliano Martinez, Reece James, Joao Pedro, Pep Chavarria, Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha are currently unavailable, weakening the squad’s quality and experience.
Chelsea now face a demanding week, beginning with their difficult trip to Liverpool, who recently defeated Brighton 2-0. Palmer’s suspension creates another problem for Alonso ahead of the encounter.
The Blues will subsequently welcome Manchester United, making positive results particularly important. Consecutive defeats could intensify the pressure surrounding Alonso before that crucial fixture.
Ultimately, victories remain the most effective way for Alonso to ease the growing concerns. Chelsea’s ownership must also demonstrate patience and allow him sufficient time to develop his team.
