According to a report by FootballTransfers on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, five footballers have emerged as leading contenders for the 2027 Ballon d’Or, with Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal among the favourites to claim the prestigious individual award.
Kane secured the 2026 prize after an outstanding campaign with Bayern Munich, but the competition for next year’s award is already beginning to take shape. Performances in domestic leagues and the Champions League are expected to play a significant role in determining who succeeds the England captain.
Barcelona youngster Yamal remains one of the strongest candidates after finishing behind Kane and Mbappé in the 2026 rankings. The Spanish international has also claimed the Kopa Trophy for three consecutive years and will be determined to turn his impressive performances into a first senior Ballon d’Or triumph.
With no major international tournament scheduled for next summer, Yamal’s chances could largely depend on his contributions to Barcelona, particularly their progress in the Champions League.
Mbappé is another major contender following his second-place finish in the previous voting. The Real Madrid forward has made an impressive start to the current campaign, recording 14 goals in 13 appearances.
The Frenchman will be hoping to maintain his scoring form and lead Real Madrid to major trophies under manager Jose Mourinho. A successful season at the Santiago Bernabéu could significantly strengthen his chances of finally winning the award.
Meanwhile, Kane will be aiming to retain his crown after establishing himself as the best player in the 2025-26 campaign. The Bayern Munich striker remains a central figure in Vincent Kompany’s attacking setup, and another successful domestic and European campaign could put him in contention for back-to-back victories.
Barcelona forward Raphinha has also entered the conversation following his remarkable performances this season. The Brazilian has scored 15 goals in 11 appearances, including two hat-tricks in La Liga.
Maintaining those numbers while helping Barcelona win major trophies could put him in a strong position to challenge for the award. He would also have the opportunity to become the first Brazilian to win the Ballon d’Or since Kaka claimed the honour in 2007.
Completing the five-player shortlist is Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha, whose performances have continued to establish him as one of Europe’s outstanding midfielders.
The Portugal international played an important role in PSG’s recent Champions League success, and another impressive European campaign could boost his chances of receiving individual recognition.
Although forwards have traditionally enjoyed an advantage in the Ballon d’Or race, Vitinha’s influence in midfield could make him a serious challenger if PSG continue their success on the European stage.
With several months remaining before the next ceremony, the race is still wide open. However, the performances of Yamal, Mbappé, Kane, Raphinha and Vitinha will be closely monitored as they attempt to make a convincing case for the 2027 Ballon d’Or.
