Journalist shares what he’s noticed whenever Wesley Fofana plays at Stamford Bridge

According to a report by The Chelsea Chronicle on Monday, November 2, 2026, Wesley Fofana is facing increasing criticism from Chelsea supporters following a series of defensive mistakes, with journalist Jacob Steinberg drawing attention to the growing frustration surrounding the French defender during the club's 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United.

Steinberg observed that supporters at Stamford Bridge are becoming increasingly impatient with Fofana, particularly those occupying the Matthew Harding Stand. The defender struggled during the opening half against Manchester United, making two costly mistakes that could have put Chelsea in a difficult position. Nevertheless, he managed to improve his performance as the Blues eventually secured a clean sheet and collected three valuable points.

Fofana's latest difficulties come after another disappointing appearance in Chelsea's Carabao Cup encounter against Liverpool. The 25-year-old conceded a penalty at Anfield before missing his attempt during the subsequent penalty shootout, an outcome that contributed to Chelsea's elimination from the competition.

According to Steinberg, the atmosphere surrounding the defender has become increasingly uncomfortable, with supporters quick to express their dissatisfaction whenever he makes an error. The criticism has reportedly continued even when Fofana produces positive defensive contributions. One example was his recovery challenge against Amad Diallo, which failed to prevent negative reactions from sections of the crowd.

Despite the criticism, Fofana's individual statistics against Manchester United suggested that he made several important contributions. Figures from Sofascore showed that he registered eight defensive actions, consisting of five interceptions, two clearances and one blocked effort. Only Romeo Lavia recorded more defensive actions among Chelsea players during the encounter.

The French international also completed 67 of his 76 attempted passes, achieving an 88 per cent accuracy rate. Additionally, he registered a successful dribble and played an important role in winning the penalty that Cole Palmer converted to extend Chelsea's advantage.

Fofana's importance to Xabi Alonso could increase in the coming weeks because of Chelsea's defensive injury problems. Maxence Lacroix is expected to remain unavailable for the rest of 2026, while Jorrel Hato is also sidelined.

With limited alternatives in central defence, Alonso may have to continue depending on Fofana. His performances in upcoming matches will therefore be important as he attempts to regain consistency, restore confidence and improve his relationship with increasingly frustrated Chelsea supporters.
