According to a report by Vanguard on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Nigeria’s Flamingos have secured a place in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup final for the first time in their history after defeating Brazil 3-1 in the semi-final.
The victory marks a significant milestone for the Nigerian side, who have now gone beyond their previous best performance of finishing third at the 2022 edition. They will have the chance to compete for the world title when they face Japan in the final.
The Flamingos produced an impressive attacking performance to overcome Brazil, with Queen Joseph and Awawu Bashiru playing decisive roles in the contest.
After a tightly contested first half ended without a goal, Joseph broke the deadlock in the 56th minute to give Nigeria the advantage.
Bashiru then strengthened Nigeria’s position by finding the net in the 71st minute before scoring again nine minutes later to complete her brace and put the game beyond Brazil’s reach.
The Brazilian team managed to respond with a late goal, but it was not enough to prevent Nigeria from recording a memorable 3-1 victory and booking their place in the final.
The achievement represents the first time Nigeria have reached the championship match since the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup was introduced. Previous campaigns had ended without the country securing a place in the final.
The young Nigerians will now turn their attention to Japan, knowing that victory would make them world champions for the first time. Regardless of the outcome, their run to the final has already secured the country’s best-ever finish in the tournament.
