Nigeria’s Flamingos have made history by reaching the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time after securing an impressive 3-1 victory over Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final in Morocco.
The Nigerian girls produced an outstanding second-half performance to overcome their South American opponents at the Mohammed VI Football Complex to book their place in the tournament’s final for the first time in the country’s history.
Queen Joseph opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 56th minute before Awawu Bashiru extended the advantage with her first goal of the match in the 71st minute.
Bashiru struck again in the 80th minute to complete her brace and put the Flamingos firmly in control of the encounter.
Brazil attempted to fight back, with Greise Kelly pulling one goal back in the 89th minute, but Nigeria held on to secure a memorable 3-1 victory.
The result represents a major milestone for Nigerian women's football, as the Flamingos had never previously progressed beyond the semi-final stage of the competition.
Nigeria's previous semi-final appearance came in 2022 in India, where they lost to Colombia before recovering to defeat Germany in the third-place match to claim the bronze medal.
However, Akeem Busari's side have now gone one step further in Morocco, guaranteeing Nigeria at least a silver medal and earning an opportunity to compete for their first U-17 Women's World Cup title.
The Flamingos will now face Japan in Saturday's final after the Asian side defeated defending champions North Korea on penalties in the other semi-final.
The final, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. local time in Morocco, will give Nigeria an opportunity to claim their maiden FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup title and become the first Nigerian team to win the competition.
