Cole Palmer was never discussed as a potential Manchester United transfer target during negotiations with Chelsea this summer, despite reports linking the England international with a move to Old Trafford.
According to a report by Football London on Friday, 30 October 2026, Manchester United did not raise Palmer's name during discussions with Chelsea, with negotiations between the clubs focusing entirely on Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos.
Palmer was strongly linked with United towards the end of last season after speculation emerged that he was missing Manchester and wanted to compete in the Champions League.
The 24-year-old is a boyhood United supporter, while Chelsea's disappointing 10th-place finish last season reportedly fuelled suggestions that he could consider leaving Stamford Bridge.
However, a report by the Daily Mail indicated that United never made an approach for Palmer, and his name did not feature in discussions involving officials from either club.
The negotiations instead centred on Santos, who eventually completed a £48million move to Old Trafford, with a further £2million included in the agreement.
Chelsea sporting director Paul Winstanley and United director of football Jason Wilcox were among those involved in the discussions.
Despite the transfer speculation, Palmer remained at Chelsea following a summer of significant changes at the club, including the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager.
The attacking midfielder has made an encouraging start to the current campaign, registering four goals and three assists in 10 appearances across all competitions.
His performances have also helped him earn a recall to the England squad after missing the summer's World Cup.
Meanwhile, Santos revealed that Palmer contacted him after his move to Manchester United was completed.
"I got a message from Cole [Palmer], he sent a message because he was born here [Manchester], so he knows everything here. He said all the best for you, for your career, you deserve this, a lot of things."
Palmer recently signed a new Chelsea contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2034, strengthening the club's position regarding his future.
