Nigeria’s Flamingos began their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 campaign with a 2–1 defeat to Poland, leaving the young Nigerian side needing a stronger performance in its remaining group matches.
According to a report published by Premium Times on Sunday, October 18, 2026, Poland secured the victory after capitalising on defensive mistakes before Nigeria mounted a late attempt to recover.
The result was disappointing for Nigeria, which created several opportunities but struggled to convert them into goals during important stages of the contest.
Poland take control before half-time
The match turned in Poland’s favour in the 33rd minute when Wiktoria Skrzypczak converted a penalty following a review of an incident involving a Nigerian defender.
The goal gave Poland the advantage despite Nigeria having created attacking opportunities earlier in the match.
The Flamingos attempted to respond, but their efforts did not produce an equaliser before the interval.
Nigeria therefore entered the second half needing to improve its attacking efficiency while remaining organised defensively.
Second goal increases Nigeria’s challenge
Poland extended its lead in the 65th minute through Natalia Skrok, who finished after receiving an assist from Blanka Zajac.
The goal followed a poor clearance by the Nigerian defence, according to Premium Times’ match analysis.
With the deficit increased to two goals, Nigeria faced a more difficult task and had to push forward in search of a way back into the contest.
Head coach Akeem Busari introduced substitutes in an attempt to improve the team’s attacking threat.
The changes eventually helped Nigeria find a breakthrough.
Umejiaku gives the Flamingos hope
Nigeria reduced the deficit in the 79th minute when Oluebube Umejiaku scored from a free-kick, with Kanyinsola Yusuf involved in the move.
The goal gave the Flamingos renewed hope and made the closing stages more competitive.
Nigeria pressed for an equaliser, but Poland held on to secure all three points.
Although the late response demonstrated the team’s determination, the Nigerian side could not undo the damage caused by the two goals conceded earlier.
Nigeria must respond in its remaining fixtures
The defeat leaves the Flamingos needing positive results in their remaining Group B matches to strengthen their position in the competition.
Nigeria is scheduled to face Puerto Rico on Tuesday, October 20, before meeting Korea DPR on Friday, October 23, according to Premium Times.
The next match will provide an opportunity for the team to address its defensive shortcomings and improve its finishing.
The loss to Poland does not by itself determine Nigeria’s final position in the group, but it increases the importance of the remaining fixtures.
For Busari’s side, reducing avoidable mistakes and making better use of attacking chances will be essential as the tournament continues.
