According to a report by the Daily Mirror on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Michael Carrick admitted that he was uncertain about his future as Manchester United manager following his side's disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
The result increased the pressure on the 45-year-old, whose team dropped to 16th place in the Premier League table after collecting just seven points from their opening eight matches.
Manchester United suffered their latest setback as Bournemouth scored three unanswered goals to secure an impressive away victory. Rayan opened the scoring with a volley at the back post before Marcus Tavernier doubled the visitors' advantage after Leny Yoro made a costly mistake.
Evanilson completed the scoring in the second half, capitalising on another defensive error to leave the home supporters frustrated. The defeat came days after United suffered a heavy 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League, further intensifying scrutiny of Carrick's leadership.
United have recorded only two victories in 12 matches across all competitions this season, while their seven-point return from eight Premier League games represents their worst start to a league campaign since 1986/87, when the club collected four points.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the Bournemouth defeat, Carrick acknowledged the difficult situation but admitted that he did not know what would happen next. He described the circumstances as challenging and maintained that he would continue to prioritise Manchester United's interests, regardless of the uncertainty surrounding his position.
The Manchester United manager also reaffirmed his commitment to the role, explaining that he loved his work and understood the responsibility that came with managing the club. However, he acknowledged that the next steps regarding his future remained unclear.
During his press conference, Carrick was also asked directly whether he expected to be dismissed. He declined to predict what would happen, leaving his position uncertain following the heavy home defeat.
United chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox were present at Old Trafford to watch the defeat, while former players Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher predicted that Carrick could lose his position.
The manager had been appointed permanently during the summer after initially making a positive impression as interim boss following Ruben Amorim's departure in January.
However, his poor start to the current campaign has placed his position under serious scrutiny. Former Bayern Munich and Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann and ex-Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe have reportedly been linked with the Manchester United job.
Carrick also acknowledged the emotional impact of the defeat on the players and supporters, describing the afternoon as a difficult experience for the club. He accepted responsibility for the team's situation and admitted that the result had hurt him because of his long-standing connection with Manchester United.
