According to a report by Barca Universal on Monday November 2, 2026, La Liga president Javier Tebas has accused Real Madrid of prolonging the Negreira investigation to damage Barcelona, claiming the club’s stance changed after the Catalans withdrew from the European Super League project.
The case concerns payments made by Barcelona to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, a former vice-president of Spain’s Referees’ Technical Committee. The matter remains under investigation by Spanish courts. Although no evidence of sporting corruption by Barcelona has been established, Real Madrid have continued to criticise their rivals over the controversy.
Speaking publicly, Tebas accused Madrid of keeping the issue alive for political reasons. He suggested the club had become more vocal after Barcelona left the Super League project.
“They are stretching the Negreira case like chewing gum,” Tebas said. He added that Madrid appeared to believe Negreira was present in every refereeing dressing room at every stadium where the club played.
The La Liga chief reminded Madrid that the league had contacted prosecutors about the matter before the Spanish giants did. He noted that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez remained on the Super League board for six months after the allegations emerged.
Tebas claimed Perez had defended Barcelona during that period because of their relationship within the project. However, he suggested the situation changed once the Catalan club decided to leave.
He described the continued attacks on Barcelona as unacceptable and insisted the club should only be held responsible if wrongdoing is established. Tebas also argued that Madrid were seeking to extend the proceedings.
The La Liga president rejected comparisons between Barcelona’s case and the charges facing Manchester City in England. He stressed that the two matters are unrelated and that Barcelona’s situation must be decided by the Spanish justice system.
