According to a report by footballTransfers on Monday October 19, 2026, Graeme Souness has urged Liverpool to offer Virgil van Dijk a new contract, saying the club captain still has plenty to give despite entering the later stages of his career.
The Netherlands international is in the final year of his current deal at Anfield. Unless Liverpool agree fresh terms with him, Van Dijk could leave next summer as a free agent.
The defender was linked with a departure before signing a two-year extension in 2025, but his long-term future is once again a talking point.
Souness believes Liverpool should keep the centre-back for at least another season, with the option of extending the agreement further. Speaking to The Mirror, he praised Van Dijk’s quality and suggested that his experience and reading of the game remain valuable assets.
“There’s still life left in Virgil,” Souness said, adding that he would offer the defender another year, with an option for a second.
He also dismissed the idea that Van Dijk has been a diminished player since returning from a serious injury, arguing that such criticism is too simplistic.
Liverpool have not yet opened formal contract talks with Van Dijk’s representatives. However, he remains an important part of the team and has formed a strong early partnership with summer signing Jeremy Jacquet.
The club may also have practical reasons to retain their captain. Replacing a defender of Van Dijk’s calibre could require a significant investment.
While Giovanni Leoni is still recovering from the ACL injury he suffered on his debut last season. His absence could limit Liverpool’s options at centre-back in the months ahead.
Van Dijk’s age will inevitably factor into any negotiations, but Souness believes his intelligence, leadership and ability to anticipate danger can help him remain effective.
Liverpool must now decide whether to offer their captain another contract or risk losing an experienced defender without receiving a transfer fee.
