According to a report by Metro published on Friday, October 30, 2026, the Portuguese midfielder is facing an increasingly challenging situation at Manchester United after the team's disappointing start to the campaign and recent disagreements with manager Michael Carrick.
Tensions reportedly developed after Fernandes criticised Carrick's tactical approach following United's heavy 4-1 defeat against Como. The midfielder was subsequently dropped to the bench for the club's 3-0 Premier League loss to Bournemouth last weekend. However, he is expected to return to the starting lineup when United travel to face Chelsea on Saturday.
The situation has raised concerns about the relationship between the captain and his manager, particularly following their reported differences over the team's performances and tactical decisions.
Despite the controversy, Fernandes remains one of United's most productive players. He recorded 30 goal contributions in 35 appearances last season, playing an important role in helping the club recover from a difficult period under former manager Ruben Amorim.
The 32-year-old reportedly has a £57 million release clause and attracted attention from several Saudi Arabian clubs during the previous summer transfer window. Nevertheless, he decided to remain at Old Trafford rather than pursue a move elsewhere.
Speaking on The Overlap, Wright explained why he had previously supported Fernandes' decision to stay at Manchester United.
“I backed him because of what he had achieved up to that point.”
However, the former Arsenal forward suggested that the midfielder might now be reconsidering his decision after witnessing the club's continued struggles.
“He’s dragged that team, done a lot of work himself and is probably frustrated now,” Wright added.
“He’s given his best years to United and there’s no way he won’t be thinking he should have left.”
Wright also expressed disappointment over Fernandes' handling of the disagreement with Carrick, questioning his decision to publicly criticise the manager.
“I genuinely believe he was the one loading the gun for Martinez and then the way that he came out afterwards and threw Michael under the bus,” Wright said.
Meanwhile, Carrick has maintained that Fernandes will continue wearing the captain's armband despite the recent controversy. The United manager remains confident in the midfielder's commitment and desire to improve the club's situation.
“He’s fully committed to this football club, he’s fully committed to making things better,” Carrick stated.
Manchester United will now hope their captain can put the disagreement behind him and deliver an influential performance against Chelsea.
