BBC Sport reported on Saturday, October 17, 2026, that Chelsea defeated Everton 2-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium in a closely contested encounter, ending the home side’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
The opening period featured limited clear scoring chances, but Everton showed plenty of physical commitment. Harrison Armstrong’s strong tackle on Josh Acheampong added intensity to the game, while Thierno Barry almost opened the scoring after connecting with Jack Grealish’s cross. However, his header went directly towards Emiliano Martinez.
Grealish later threatened to put Everton in front with a long-distance effort that bounced off the turf and required Martinez to push it over the crossbar. The home side continued to create chances, with Barry forcing another save from Martinez after Vitalii Mykolenko produced a promising move down the left.
For much of the first half, Chelsea struggled to display their usual attacking quality. However, the visitors nearly broke the deadlock when Moises Caicedo unleashed a powerful volley that crashed against the crossbar. Neto also came close to scoring before the break, but Pickford made an important save to turn his attempt over the crossbar.
The visitors eventually found the breakthrough soon after the second half began. Hato and Rogers linked up well on the left side, allowing Hato to pick out Neto with a well-timed pass. Neto took advantage of the opportunity by shooting from close range, sending the ball underneath Pickford’s extended arm and giving Chelsea the lead.
Chelsea grew more confident after scoring, and Palmer almost made it 2-0 when he attempted to chip the ball over the goalkeeper, only for his effort to drift narrowly wide.
Everton then suffered a major setback when Martinez was unable to continue after colliding with Branthwaite while dealing with a set-piece. Penders entered the game as his replacement, making his first Premier League appearance and becoming the youngest goalkeeper to play for Chelsea in the competition.
The visitors maintained their search for a second goal and eventually put the match beyond Everton through Neto. When Henderson’s free-kick became entangled in the defensive wall, Neto seized the opportunity and calmly struck the ball with his left foot to score his second goal of the match.
Chelsea’s 2-0 triumph also brought an end to their nine-month wait for a Premier League clean sheet. It was their first shut-out in 22 league matches, while the victory lifted them to fourth place in the standings. Everton, meanwhile, dropped to sixth after recording their first Premier League defeat of the campaign.
