Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso believes Romeo Lavia is finally demonstrating why the club invested €62 million in bringing him to Stamford Bridge, following a noticeable improvement in his fitness and recovery from recurring injury problems.
According to a report published by The Athletic on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Chelsea are becoming increasingly satisfied with the midfielder's recent performances. Alonso has been particularly impressed by his improved physical condition, growing confidence and ability to handle a demanding run of fixtures.
Lavia arrived at Chelsea from Southampton in July 2023 in a deal reportedly worth €62 million (£51 million). However, his development at Stamford Bridge has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries, limiting his opportunities to establish himself as a regular first-team player.
The Belgian midfielder is now showing signs of reaching his best level after completing 90 minutes in consecutive matches against Liverpool and Manchester United.
His ability to play two full matches within a period of less than 72 hours has impressed Alonso, who believes the 22-year-old has made significant progress both physically and mentally.
Speaking about his improvement, the Chelsea manager said:
"Rom is feeling better, stronger and more confident. He went from playing the whole game at Anfield to doing it again less than 72 hours later with the same energy. Sometimes the head is more important than the legs, and his head is in a good place."
Lavia also produced an outstanding display in Chelsea's 2-0 win over Manchester United, recording 23 defensive contributions, the highest tally by any player during the encounter.
The 22-year-old further contributed offensively by registering his second assist for Chelsea, setting up Morgan Rogers during the Premier League clash.
Alonso praised his overall contribution, pointing to his composure on the ball, intelligent positioning and ability to connect the defensive and attacking departments of the team.
"From a midfielder's point of view, it was a very complete display," the Chelsea manager said. "He made good decisions, switched play well and competed throughout. I've seen him in top form over the past few weeks, and he deserves recognition."
Lavia will now be looking to maintain his impressive form when Chelsea travel to face Sunderland on Sunday.
The Blues head into the encounter after securing three victories in their last four Premier League games, a run that has moved them into fourth place in the standings.
His improving fitness represents a significant boost for Chelsea as Alonso continues to strengthen his midfield options.
After enduring several frustrating seasons because of recurring injuries, Lavia finally appears to be developing the physical condition, confidence and consistency required to become an important figure in Chelsea's first team.
