According to a report by the Evening Standard on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Xabi Alonso has revealed that his half-time instructions played an important role in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues recovered from a disappointing first-half performance to secure all three points, responding positively after suffering a Carabao Cup exit against Liverpool and a home league defeat to Tottenham.
Manchester United had looked the more dangerous side before the break and were unfortunate not to take the lead after creating several opportunities. Matheus Cunha also had a close-range header ruled out for offside, leaving Chelsea needing an improved performance in the second half.
Alonso subsequently challenged his players to take greater control of the game through better possession and improved decision-making on the ball. Explaining his half-time message after the match, the Chelsea manager said the team had discussed winning the encounter by improving their performance in possession.
He explained that the players were instructed to avoid giving the ball away unnecessarily and make tactical adjustments to become more comfortable on the pitch. According to Alonso, the changes helped Chelsea gain better control of the match, improve their defensive organisation and create the conditions for their opening goal.
The hosts made the breakthrough five minutes after the restart when Morgan Rogers produced a superb individual effort to put Chelsea ahead. Cole Palmer then doubled their advantage from the penalty spot after Lisandro Martinez fouled Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area.
The Manchester United defender was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, having committed two bookable offences within 83 seconds. Chelsea had opportunities to increase their advantage, with Estevao seeing two goals ruled out for offside.
Palmer and substitute Valentin Barco also missed chances, while United goalkeeper Senne Lammens made several important saves. Despite playing with 10 men, United attempted to reduce the deficit, but substitute goalkeeper Mike Penders produced an outstanding stoppage-time save to turn Bryan Mbeumo’s powerful long-range effort onto the crossbar.
The victory provided a timely response for Alonso's side after their difficult week and lifted Chelsea back to fourth place in the Premier League table. Chelsea's attention will now turn to maintaining their position among the leading teams as they look to build on the important win.
