According to a report by Metro on Saturday October 17, 2026, Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez was taken to hospital after suffering a frightening injury during his side's 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday.
The Argentine international was stretchered off following a heavy collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, prompting concern among players, staff and supporters.
The incident occurred in the second half when Martinez came off his line to deal with a free-kick delivery into the penalty area. As both players attempted to reach the ball, they collided heavily, leaving them on the ground.
While Branthwaite eventually managed to get back to his feet, Martinez remained down as medical personnel from both teams rushed to provide assistance.
The Chelsea goalkeeper received oxygen while being treated on the pitch, with medical staff taking considerable time to assess his condition. He was eventually carried off on a stretcher and taken directly to a local hospital for further examinations.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso provided an update after the match, confirming that Martinez was conscious when he left the stadium.
"As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious and right now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests," Alonso said.
The Spaniard added that the club would have to wait for further information before determining the extent of the goalkeeper's injury.
Martinez was replaced by Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders, who made his Premier League debut after coming on in the 75th minute.
Despite the worrying incident, Chelsea managed to secure all three points, recording a 2-0 victory over Everton.
Pedro Neto was the standout performer for the visitors, scoring twice to help Chelsea claim an important away win. His first goal arrived shortly after the interval, while his second came late in the game to seal the result.
The victory also provided Chelsea with a clean sheet, but Martinez's injury overshadowed the team's achievement.
Following the final whistle, Neto expressed his concern for his teammate and dedicated the victory to him, wishing the goalkeeper a speedy recovery.
Chelsea will now await the outcome of Martinez's medical examinations before providing further information about his condition.
