Chelsea have reportedly opened discussions over a potential move for Brentford left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf as Xabi Alonso looks to strengthen his defensive options ahead of future transfer windows.
According to a report by The Athletic on Monday, 2 November 2026, Chelsea have made contact with Diouf's representatives as they consider bringing the Senegal international to Stamford Bridge.
The 21-year-old only joined Brentford from West Ham United for £40m during the summer, but his impressive performances have already attracted interest from some of the Premier League's biggest clubs.
Liverpool are also monitoring the defender, with reports suggesting that both clubs have established contact with his agent ahead of a possible transfer.
A move to Stamford Bridge would see Diouf represent his third London club in just 18 months, having previously played for West Ham before completing his move to Brentford.
Chelsea's interest comes amid continuing concerns about their options at left-back. Pep Chavarria arrived from Rayo Vallecano during the summer, while Jorrel Hato is another option available to Alonso.
However, neither player has completely established himself in the position. Marco Palestra also started at left-back in Chelsea's recent Premier League victory over Manchester United.
Alonso's decision to switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation against United has further highlighted the importance of having defensively reliable full-backs, particularly if Chelsea intend to continue using the system.
Diouf's statistics suggest he could offer significant improvements in that department.
In the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, the Senegalese defender averages 3.51 tackles and 1.75 interceptions per 90 minutes.
Chavarria records 1.43 tackles and 1.43 interceptions, while Hato averages 2.61 tackles and 0.65 interceptions.
Diouf also leads the comparison in ball recoveries, duels won and aerial duels won, demonstrating his defensive strength.
However, his attacking contribution should not be overlooked. He registered five assists in 36 appearances for West Ham last season despite the club's relegation.
A January departure appears unlikely, considering Brentford only invested £40m in his services a few months ago.
Nevertheless, Chelsea could revisit their interest next summer if Brentford become willing to consider offers.
Diouf's performances have made him an attractive option for Alonso, although Chelsea would need to compete with Liverpool to secure his signature.
