John Obi Mikel fears ‘superb’ Chelsea star could leave because of Xabi Alonso

According to a report by Metro on Monday October 26, 2026, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has warned that Estevao could consider leaving Stamford Bridge if he continues to struggle for regular playing time under manager Xabi Alonso.

The Brazilian teenager enjoyed an impressive debut season after joining Chelsea from Palmeiras in 2025, scoring eight goals and providing four assists. However, a serious hamstring injury in April disrupted his progress and forced him to miss the 2026 World Cup.

Since Alonso took charge, Estevao has found opportunities in the first team difficult to come by, with competition from Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro limiting his involvement. The youngster has yet to establish himself as a regular starter in the Premier League this season.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel praised Estevao's ability and urged Alonso to find a way to give the 19-year-old more minutes without disrupting the team's attacking balance.

“What he did last season since joining the football club, he's been superb, he's been brilliant,” Mikel said.

The former Nigeria international acknowledged that Chelsea have strong attacking options but believes the manager must rotate his players more effectively to help Estevao develop and regain his rhythm.

Mikel suggested that Alonso does not necessarily need to start the Brazilian in every match. Instead, introducing him more frequently in the second half could provide valuable opportunities while allowing the established attacking players to maintain their places.

He also expressed concern about reports suggesting that Estevao has become frustrated with his limited playing time, with Barcelona reportedly monitoring the situation.

“It's not a criticism of Xabi Alonso but it's something that he needs to look at,” Mikel explained. “We have a young player, the last thing we want to see him do is to leave the football club.”

Mikel believes Estevao has the potential to become an important player for Chelsea for years to come, but stressed that the club must ensure he receives enough opportunities to fulfil that promise.

The former midfielder also encouraged the youngster to demonstrate his determination in training and fight respectfully for his place in the team rather than becoming discouraged by the competition.

For Alonso, managing Estevao's development could become an important issue as Chelsea approach a demanding period of the season. Giving the teenager more minutes could help him build confidence and prepare for a greater role in the squad.
