Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Fenerbahce in the Champions League exposed several weaknesses in their performance, with a number of players failing to make the most of their opportunities as the Turkish side fought back to claim victory.
According to a report by Flashscore on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Trey Nyoni put Liverpool ahead in the 25th minute before Mason Greenwood restored parity for Fenerbahce. Alexander Isak then gave the visitors another lead in the 69th minute, but goals from Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi completed a late comeback for the hosts.
Despite creating chances throughout the contest, some Liverpool players struggled to deliver when their team needed them most. Four individuals, in particular, endured difficult outings.
1. Virgil van Dijk
Virgil van Dijk had a disappointing night as Liverpool’s backline failed to hold on to their advantage. The defender gave away a free kick in the 33rd minute after committing a foul on an opponent.
He came close to making an impact at the other end in the 57th minute, but his header from a corner was brilliantly stopped by Ederson. His most costly moment came in stoppage time when he failed to convert a clear chance to rescue a point, sending his close-range effort over the crossbar after receiving a pass from Cody Gakpo.
2. Joe Gomez
Joe Gomez struggled to produce the quality required, even when he found opportunities to contribute in attack. In the 21st minute, he worked his way past several challenges inside the penalty area but wasted the promising move with an overhit pass intended for Bradley Barcola.
His attempt from distance in the 61st minute was equally disappointing, drifting well wide of the left post. Liverpool needed more precision and composure from the defender in those important situations.
3. Dominik Szoboszlai
Dominik Szoboszlai was unable to make a consistent contribution, with his set-piece deliveries proving particularly ineffective. His corners in the 20th, 24th and 62nd minutes failed to create any significant threat.
The midfielder also saw his free kick in the 54th minute comfortably gathered by the goalkeeper. Another corner late in stoppage time produced little, adding to an evening in which his delivery lacked the quality Liverpool needed.
4. Bradley Barcola
Bradley Barcola also endured a difficult outing, failing to turn his attacking opportunities into meaningful contributions. The forward missed a good chance in the 37th minute when he headed Victor Munoz’s cross narrowly wide of the right post.
He was also caught offside several times in the 78th minute, disrupting Liverpool’s attempts to build attacking momentum. Although he tried to trouble Fenerbahce’s defence, his finishing and movement left much to be desired.
