Jesse Derry’s stance on January Chelsea return revealed as Sporting loanee is left out again

Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry is reportedly determined to prove himself at Sporting CP despite finding regular first-team opportunities difficult to come by, although a possible return to Stamford Bridge in January has not been ruled out.

According to a report by Football London on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Chelsea have the option to recall the 19-year-old winger from his season-long loan when the January transfer window opens.

Derry moved to Portugal during the summer after making encouraging progress at Chelsea, where his performances for the Under-21 side earned him opportunities with the senior team last season.

The youngster made his first-team debut against Hull City in the FA Cup before being handed his first Premier League start against Nottingham Forest in May.

However, his experience at Sporting has been challenging so far, with the winger managing just seven appearances across all competitions this season.

He has accumulated only 133 minutes of playing time, providing one assist without finding the back of the net. His limited involvement includes four appearances in the Portuguese league and two matches in the Champions League.

Derry recently registered an assist during Sporting's 2-1 Allianz Cup victory over Maritimo but was left on the bench without being introduced in the club's following two fixtures.

He also missed out on an opportunity to play against Shakhtar Donetsk at Stamford Bridge, where Sporting recorded a 1-0 victory.

Despite struggling to secure regular minutes, the teenager is reportedly unwilling to give up on his opportunity in Portugal and remains focused on establishing himself at the club.

The Athletic, as quoted by The Chelsea Chronicle, revealed that Chelsea have the option to bring the winger back to Stamford Bridge during the January transfer window. However, the report indicated that Derry's immediate priority remains making his loan spell successful.

His current stance was described as follows: "Derry’s only thoughts right now are to make his time at Sporting CP a success and to help the team."

Chelsea will therefore face an important decision when the January window arrives, particularly if the youngster continues to struggle for regular involvement.

Although recalling him to Stamford Bridge remains a possibility, the Blues could also consider sending him on another loan spell to a club where he would have a better chance of securing consistent first-team football and continuing his development.
