Chelsea knew what they were doing after cooling interest in one of Brighton’s key players

According to a report by The Chelsea Chronicle on Monday, 2 November 2026, Chelsea appear to have made the right decision by cooling their interest in Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, with Mike Penders beginning to demonstrate why the club invested in his development.

Chelsea considered signing Verbruggen during the summer transfer window but eventually decided against pursuing a deal, opting to bring in Emiliano Martinez instead.

The decision could prove beneficial for the Blues, particularly with Penders now getting opportunities in the first team following Martinez's injury.

Chelsea's transfer strategy under Clearlake Capital has attracted criticism because of the significant money spent on players who have struggled to deliver.

However, their decision not to sign Verbruggen could be viewed differently as Penders continues to develop.

At 24, the Brighton goalkeeper is only three years older than Penders and could have restricted the Belgian youngster's opportunities at Stamford Bridge.

Instead, Martinez's arrival has provided Chelsea with an experienced goalkeeper while leaving room for Penders to establish himself as the club's long-term first choice.

The statistical comparison between Penders and Verbruggen also offers encouragement. According to FotMob, the Brighton goalkeeper has recorded a 78.8 per cent save percentage this season, marginally ahead of Penders' 77.8 per cent.

Penders has averaged 3.23 saves per 90 minutes, compared with Verbruggen's 2.89. However, the Dutchman has a clear advantage in distribution, completing 75.7 per cent of his passes compared with Penders' 58.1 per cent.

Experience is another important difference, with Verbruggen playing nine matches and accumulating 810 minutes, while Penders has featured in three games, totalling 195 minutes.

Although Penders made an error in his first Premier League start against Tottenham Hotspur, his subsequent performances have provided reasons for optimism.

Verbruggen remains a quality goalkeeper, but Chelsea can take encouragement from Penders' progress.

Rather than investing heavily in another goalkeeper, giving the Belgian more opportunities could prove a sensible decision for Xabi Alonso and the club's long-term plans.
