According to a report by Metro on Sunday, October 18, 2026, Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has confirmed that his surgery was successful and expressed optimism about returning to action within weeks after suffering a broken jaw during the 2-0 victory over Everton.
the Argentina international provided the update from his hospital bed following a frightening collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during Saturday's Premier League encounter at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The incident occurred midway through the second half when both players collided while challenging for the ball. Medical staff attended to Martinez, forcing an eight-minute stoppage before the 34-year-old was carried off the pitch on a stretcher and taken to hospital.
Martinez subsequently underwent surgery to repair his broken jaw, raising concerns about his availability for Chelsea's upcoming fixtures.
However, the former Arsenal and Aston Villa goalkeeper reassured supporters with a positive message on Instagram.
"Thanks to everyone for the messages, the operation went well," Martinez wrote.
He also highlighted Chelsea's performance against Everton, adding: "The most important thing is that we won and with a clean sheet. We’ll be back in a few weeks ❤️."
Pedro Neto scored twice, with goals in either half, as Chelsea secured their first clean sheet of the Premier League season. The victory lifted Xabi Alonso's side to fourth position in the table.
With Martinez expected to spend time recovering, Mike Penders is likely to retain his place in goal when Chelsea host Tottenham in their next match in a week's time.
The 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper replaced Martinez against Everton, making his third first-team appearance for Chelsea following his £17 million move from Genk.
Penders spent last season on loan at Strasbourg, where he made 33 league appearances and helped the French club finish eighth in Ligue 1.
Chelsea manager Alonso expressed confidence in the young goalkeeper's ability to handle the responsibility.
"Mike has personality," Alonso said.
"He's brave and we have full trust with him. He did well when he came on."
The Spaniard also stressed the importance of squad depth, explaining that players must be prepared to contribute whenever opportunities arise.
