FootballTransfers reported on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, that Barcelona are considering a January move for Arsenal defender Piero Hincapié, whom they believe could address their defensive needs.
SPORT says sporting director Deco has made preliminary contact with the Ecuadorian’s representatives to find out whether he would be open to a move during the season.
Barcelona want a versatile defender capable of playing both centre-back and left-back. After investing heavily in attack and midfield over the summer, the club made relatively few changes to its defence. With another La Liga title and a strong Champions League campaign in their sights, reinforcing the back line is now a priority.
Hincapié joined Arsenal permanently last summer for a reported €40 million after impressing on loan. He has made 25 Premier League appearances and started the Champions League final, but has had fewer opportunities this season. Riccardo Calafiori’s return to fitness has pushed Hincapié down the pecking order, and he has mainly played in cup competitions or come on as a substitute.
Despite his limited minutes, Arsenal are reportedly unwilling to let him leave. Mikel Arteta appreciates his versatility, and the club remains active in several competitions. Hincapié has not indicated that he wants to depart either, while injuries have hindered his bid for a regular starting role.
Barcelona could offer him more playing time. Data company SciSports considers the Catalan club a better fit, rating Barcelona 81 out of 100 for Hincapié compared with Arsenal’s 74. The assessment reflects Barcelona’s need for experienced defenders, as they have relied on several academy players this season.
A transfer would nevertheless be challenging. Hincapié’s estimated value is about €61.5 million, and Arsenal would have little reason to sell midway through the campaign. Barcelona may also look at alternatives, including Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, though Hincapié remains an appealing target.
