Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained how his half-time instructions helped his team secure a 2-0 victory over Manchester United in Saturday’s Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues struggled to find a breakthrough during the opening 45 minutes, with both sides creating opportunities but failing to score.
However, Alonso said his message at the interval was to maintain control of the game and keep possession of the ball.
Speaking after the match, the Chelsea manager told Sky Sports: “At half-time we spoke about keeping control and said we will win the game if we keep the ball. It was a mature performance.”
His players responded after the restart, with Morgan Rogers opening the scoring in the 50th minute. The forward produced an impressive solo run before lifting the ball over Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Chelsea strengthened their advantage through Cole Palmer, who converted a penalty in the 64th minute after United defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off for a second yellow card.
The dismissal left Manchester United with 10 players and made their comeback more difficult.
Alonso praised his team's response after a difficult first half, describing the performance as an important step forward.
The victory also helped Chelsea return to winning ways in the Premier League after their recent setback against Tottenham.
For Manchester United, the defeat increased the pressure on manager Michael Carrick, whose side continued to struggle for consistency.
Chelsea will now turn their attention to their next league fixture against Sunderland, while United prepare for their Champions League meeting with Roma.
