Hearts of Pine midfielder Mikey Lopez announced on Instagram that Portland’s season finale on Saturday will be the final game of his 14-year career.
Lopez, 33, has played 47 games in two seasons with the Hearts of Pine, including 31 last season. He was named the USL League One Comeback Player of the Year in 2025 after Achilles surgery wiped out his 2024 season.
The Hearts of Pine’s captain has played 16 games this season, with eight starts.
“I think Saturday will close the circle on my career,” Lopez said in a video posted to Instagram. “Being able to play in front of my family, a sold-out crowd at Fitzpatrick Stadium and playing for (Hearts of Pine coach) Bobby (Murphy) one last time I think is the perfect way to end my career.”
Lopez played for Murphy at a Texas development academy in grades 8-12. He played at the University of North Carolina and was a first-round pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by Sporting Kansas City. He spent three seasons in Kansas City, followed by two with New York City FC. He also played seven seasons in USL Championship, the last six with Birmingham, where he was the franchise’s first captain.
Portland host Charlotte Independence at 5 p.m. Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium. The Hearts of Pine, who reached the USL League One semifinals in their first season, are 7-14-10 this season and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
