Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has scored his first goal for Sheffield United, although his effort was not enough to prevent the Blades from suffering a 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic in the English Championship.
Ayew headed home Sheffield United’s equaliser after Millenic Alli had given Charlton an early lead in the 12th minute at The Valley.
The Ghanaian forward was recalled to the starting line-up following Sheffield United’s midweek victory over Preston North End and made an immediate impact by getting on the scoresheet.
However, Charlton regained the lead with 11 minutes remaining when Matty Godden found the back of the net to secure all three points for the hosts.
The victory ended Charlton’s 11-game winless run in the league and marked their first Championship triumph since August 29.
The result moved Charlton to 19th position, seven points clear of the relegation zone, while Sheffield United saw their four-match unbeaten run come to an end.
Despite the disappointment of the defeat, Ayew will take confidence from opening his scoring account for the Blades.
The Black Stars captain will now hope to build on the milestone and help Sheffield United improve their results as they continue their Championship campaign.
