Khune Recalls Going Toe-to-Toe with Young Fan Favourite Vilakazi

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has opened up about a special moment when he went head-to-head with rising star Mfundo Vilakazi on the pitch. In a recent chat on The Carwash Podcast, the experienced goalkeeper shared how he made important saves while the young midfielder put on a show for the fans.

The story goes back to the Carling Knockout All-Star match in January 2024. Khune, already a long-serving Amakhosi player and one of Mzansi’s best goalkeepers, lined up against a team of young talents. Vilakazi, who was just 18 at the time, scored the opening goal with a free-kick and dazzled the crowd with his skill and confidence. At the same time, Khune stayed sharp between the sticks and produced crucial stops that helped the All-Stars win 2-1.

In the podcast, Khune remembered the contest clearly. He spoke about the challenge of facing a lively young player like Vilakazi and how it pushed him to stay focused. For Khune, it was more than just a friendly match. It reminded him that he still had plenty to offer, even after many years at the top. The moment also fired his hunger to prove that his best days were not behind him.

Vilakazi, now known as “Obrigado,” has since grown into a regular for Kaizer Chiefs. Fans love his flair and energy, and he has become one of the most exciting young players in the Betway Premiership. Khune has always had kind words for him. After that All-Star game, he advised Vilakazi and other youngsters to stay patient, work hard, and ignore the noise around them. He said opportunities would come if they kept improving.

The podcast episode covers more than just that battle. Khune also spoke about his long career with Chiefs, the ups and downs he faced, and how support from fans kept him going. Hearing him talk about going toe-to-toe with Vilakazi shows the respect between the old guard and the new generation at the club.

For Chiefs supporters, stories like this are special. They show how legends like Khune still set the standard while young players like Vilakazi bring fresh energy. The full episode is available on YouTube for fans who want to hear Khune tell the story in his own words.
