Durban City has made history by reaching the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup after a decisive 3-0 win against AS Port-Louis 2000 on Sunday afternoon. The South African club triumphed with a 6-1 aggregate score, securing their spot in the next round of the continental tournament.
This achievement is significant for Durban City, as it marks their maiden participation in continental football. They reached this milestone just two seasons after being promoted to the premier league, following their victory in the Nedbank Cup last season.
Coached by Eric Tinkler, the team traveled to Mauritius aiming to finalize their advantage from the first leg. They put in another strong performance, scoring three goals without conceding, thus comfortably eliminating their opponents.
Gaston Sirino opened the scoring in the 12th minute, having also netted in the first leg, which helped Durham City seize early control of the match. Haashim Domingo added a second goal in the 25th minute, putting the visitors in a favorable position heading into halftime. With two goals already secured, Durban City confidently approached the break, edging closer to qualification.
The South African side continued their dominant display after the interval, with Ethan Brooks, who replaced Sirino at halftime, scoring in the 52nd minute to extend the lead to 3-0. This goal capped a comprehensive performance by Tinkler’s team and widened their aggregate lead to five goals.
Earlier, Durban City demonstrated their competitive edge in this tournament by eliminating Burundi’s Rukinzo in the first qualifying round, while AS Port-Louis 2000 advanced by overcoming Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy.
With this victory, Durban City is now set to learn who their opponents will be in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup. The upcoming draw will outline their next challenge as they embark on their inaugural continental journey.
For Tinkler and his team, this qualification is a significant milestone for the club. Their strong performances across both legs have provided a solid start to their African competitive experience, and they aim to carry this momentum into the group stages.
