Mamelodi Sundowns have avoided potential disciplinary concerns after FIFA confirmed that the club will have no booking issues from their victory over Al Ahli in the African-Asian-Pacific Cup ahead of the upcoming Challenger Cup.
The confirmation is welcome news for the South African side as they prepare for their next challenge on the international stage. Three Sundowns players, Teboho Mokoena, Nuno Santos and Brayan Leon, received yellow cards during the match against Al Ahli.
Although the cautions attracted attention, Sundowns have avoided the possibility of a significant FIFA fine linked to the number of players booked during a single match.
According to the September 2026 edition of the FIFA Legal Handbook, a team can face a fine of USD 10,000, approximately R164,000, if five or more of its players receive yellow cards in one match.
The rule is intended to address disciplinary issues during matches and applies when the required number of players from the same team are cautioned by the referee.
However, Sundowns had only three players booked in their encounter with Al Ahli. As a result, the club did not reach the threshold that could trigger the reported financial penalty.
The three cautions involving Mokoena, Santos and Leon therefore did not put the Brazilians in danger of the specific fine associated with five or more bookings in one match.
The development provides clarity for Sundowns as they continue their campaign following their success in the African-Asian-Pacific Cup. Their attention can now turn to the Challenger Cup without concerns about a suspension or fine arising from those three yellow cards under the rule in question.
For a club competing in several competitions, disciplinary regulations remain an important consideration. Yellow cards can affect player availability, while teams must also ensure that they comply with the rules governing international matches.
Sundowns will be hoping to maintain their momentum as they pursue further success beyond South Africa. The club has continued to represent the country in international competitions, making disciplinary management an important part of its preparations.
Meanwhile, the news will interest South African football supporters, particularly fans of Orlando Pirates, Sundowns' rivals in the domestic game.
However, the key point is that the three players' cautions did not meet the reported threshold for the USD 10,000 fine. FIFA's confirmation has also clarified that Sundowns have no outstanding booking concerns from their victory over Al Ahli ahead of the Challenger Cup.
