MBOKAZI GETS BAFANA RECALL AS PITSO MOSIMANE EXPLAINS ADEN MCCARTHY'S SNUB—DEFENSIVE SELECTION SPURS DEBATE!
Ahead of South Africa's upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Kenya, Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has discussed his defensive selection choices and explained why promising defender Aden McCarthy was left out despite his outstanding performances in European football.
McCarthy, who presently plays for Sabah FK in Azerbaijan, has gained recognition for his positive performances, which include scoring in the UEFA Champions League. But despite his recent successes, he was not included in Mosimane's final roster for the pivotal games against the Harambee Stars.
Speaking on SABC, Mosimane praised the young player's development but emphasised that prior contributions and national team results should also be taken into consideration when choosing players.
"Aden McCarthy was present. I take it he also scored? In the Champions League, he scored. However, Mbokazi has performed incredibly well for the national team, so we must give him a chance to return," Mosimane said.
Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who has returned to the national squad following an injury recovery, was the Bafana mentor's reference. The Chicago Fire defender's return is a significant addition to South Africa's defensive options because he previously made an impression at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mosimane further explained the challenging fight for spots in central defence by highlighting Olwethu Makhanya's outstanding performances.
The coach is faced with an increasingly difficult selection dilemma as seasoned and up-and-coming defenders vie for scarce spots. As Bafana get ready for their next tasks, alternatives include Ime Okon, Makhanya, Mbokazi, and Lebone Seema.
On November 13, South Africa will host Kenya at Orlando Amstel Arena. On November 17, they will travel for the rematch.
OUR VIEW:
Mosimane's choice makes sense, especially in light of Mbokazi's prior contributions to Bafana and the significance of preserving continuity in a competitive national team setting.
McCarthy's Champions League achievements, though, should not be disregarded. He is a promising defensive prospect at age 22, and his growth merits ongoing observation.
Both present form and continuity should be rewarded in international football. McCarthy needs to stay firmly in the conversation, even though Mbokazi deserves his chance.
In the end, competition for spots can only help Bafana Bafana achieve more success.
Do you support Pitso Mosimane's defensive choices? Was Aden McCarthy a better choice than another defender?
