Orlando Pirates Join Mamelodi Sundowns In Carling Knockout Semi-Finals After Eliminating Sekhukhune United

Orlando Pirates have taken another important step towards defending their Carling Knockout crown after defeating Sekhukhune United 1-0 at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, 7 November 2026, to secure their place in the semi-finals.

The Buccaneers produced a determined performance in front of their home supporters, knowing that anything less than victory would bring their title defence to an end.

However, the Soweto giants showed their determination and eventually found the breakthrough through young attacker Mpho Padime, whose first-half goal proved decisive in a tightly contested encounter.

The result means Orlando Pirates have joined Mamelodi Sundowns in the last four of the competition, with the remaining quarter-final fixtures still to determine the other semi-finalists.

For Pirates supporters, this victory represents another opportunity to dream about lifting the trophy for a second consecutive season.

The match started with both teams attempting to establish control, although Pirates enjoyed more possession during the opening stages.

The Buccaneers looked dangerous through their attacking movements, with Deon Hotto and Tshepang Moremi creating opportunities from the wide areas.

Gamphani Lungu came close to opening the scoring when he connected with a delivery from Hotto, but his header went narrowly wide.

Sekhukhune United also threatened through Chibuike Ohizu, who attempted to take advantage of spaces behind the Pirates defence.

However, goalkeeper Sipho Chaine remained alert and dealt with the danger.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 31st minute.

Following a cleverly executed free-kick routine, Thapelo Mokobodi played the ball quickly to Moremi, who delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area.

The Sekhukhune defence failed to deal with the delivery, allowing Padime to take advantage of the defensive confusion.

The young attacker reacted quickly and poked the ball into the back of the net to give Orlando Pirates a deserved 1-0 advantage.

It was a particularly important moment for Padime, who made his first start for the Buccaneers count by delivering the goal that ultimately secured qualification.

After conceding, Sekhukhune United attempted to increase the pressure in search of an equaliser.

Coach Papi Zothwane's team understood that another defeat against Pirates would end their hopes of progressing in the competition.

Babina Noko tried to create opportunities through their attacking players, but the Buccaneers remained organised defensively.

Pirates also had opportunities to extend their advantage before the final whistle.

Following the introduction of Oswin Appollis in the second half, the home side looked more threatening going forward.

Appollis brought additional energy and creativity, helping Pirates create opportunities that could have put the contest beyond Sekhukhune's reach.

Tshepang Moremi also missed a golden opportunity after finding himself in a promising position inside the penalty area.

His effort went over the crossbar, leaving Sekhukhune with hope of finding a late equaliser.

The visitors continued pushing forward during the closing stages, with Thabo Nkwana forcing Chaine into an important save.

The Pirates goalkeeper produced a crucial intervention to protect his team's advantage.

As the rain fell at Orlando Amstel Arena, the Buccaneers remained disciplined and successfully defended their narrow lead until the referee brought the contest to an end.

The victory was another significant result for Abdeslam Ouaddou and his players.

It marked Orlando Pirates' fourth consecutive victory over Sekhukhune United this season across all competitions.

The Buccaneers had already defeated Babina Noko in their MTN8 semi-final encounters and the Betway Premiership before eliminating them from the Carling Knockout.

Their latest success also extended their winning run in all competitions to six consecutive matches.

Despite the impressive statistics, Ouaddou will know that his players must improve their finishing if they want to retain the trophy.

Creating opportunities is important, but converting those chances will become increasingly crucial as the competition approaches its decisive stages.

Pirates are not the only South African giants celebrating qualification.

Mamelodi Sundowns have also secured their place in the Carling Knockout semi-finals, meaning two of the country's biggest clubs are now among the remaining contenders.

The possibility of another major showdown between the Buccaneers and Masandawana has already generated excitement among football supporters.

Both teams have demonstrated their ability to compete for silverware, although they must first discover their next opponents before thinking about the final.

For Pirates, the immediate objective will be maintaining their momentum and ensuring that their performances continue improving.

The Carling Knockout represents another opportunity for Orlando Pirates to add silverware to their growing collection.

Having won the competition last season, the Buccaneers understand the responsibility that comes with defending their title.

Ouaddou has also demonstrated his willingness to trust younger players, with Padime's contribution providing another encouraging example.
