Orlando Pirates Coach Considers Psychologist Support Ahead of CAF Champions League Challenge
Orlando Pirates Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou Makes Major Admission About Young Squad Ahead of CAF Champions League
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has admitted that his young squad could benefit from the services of a sports psychologist as the Soweto giants prepare for the pressure and expectations that come with competing in the CAF Champions League group stages.
The Buccaneers secured their place in the competition's group phase with an impressive 5-0 aggregate victory over Namibian outfit African Stars. However, despite the convincing result, Ouaddou believes his players still need to improve their ability to handle pressure, particularly when representing one of South Africa's biggest football clubs.
Pirates defeated African Stars 1-0 away from home before completing the job with a commanding 4-0 victory in the return leg at Orlando Amstel Arena. The result marked an important achievement for the Soweto giants, who are determined to make a strong impression on the continental stage.
Despite the success, Ouaddou identified mental strength as an important area that requires attention before the more demanding challenges of the group stages begin.
The Moroccan coach explained that Pirates have one of the youngest squads in the Premier Soccer League, with several new players still adjusting to the demands of playing for a club with such a large and passionate fan base.
According to Ouaddou, the pressure associated with wearing the famous black-and-white jersey can influence players' decision-making, even when they possess the technical ability to perform at the highest level.
He pointed to the difference between his team's performances in the first and second halves against African Stars as an example of how pressure can affect players during matches.
Ouaddou believes the challenge is not necessarily a lack of quality but rather helping his players develop the composure and confidence required to make better decisions in difficult situations.
The Pirates coach acknowledged that he would do his best to guide the squad but suggested that professional psychological assistance could become necessary.
He explained that a sports psychologist could help the players understand their emotions, manage expectations and prepare mentally for the demanding encounters awaiting them in the CAF Champions League.
The Buccaneers will face stronger opposition in the group stages, where away matches, difficult travelling conditions and hostile atmospheres could test their character.
Pirates have ambitions of winning Africa's premier club competition again, having lifted the trophy in 1995. Their previous campaign also demonstrated their potential, as they reached the semi-finals in the 2024/25 season before being eliminated by eventual champions Pyramids FC.
With several young players expected to gain valuable continental experience, Ouaddou will be hoping to build a team capable of competing consistently against Africa's established powerhouses.
For Pirates, qualification is only the beginning. Developing the mental strength to match their footballing ability could prove decisive in determining how far the Buccaneers progress this season.
