Mamelodi Sundowns have received positive news from FIFA ahead of their upcoming Challenger Cup clash after avoiding any booking-related complications following their African-Asian-Pacific Cup encounter against Al Ahli.
The Brazilians had three players booked during the match, with Teboho Mokoena, Nuno Santos and Brayan Leon all receiving yellow cards. However, the number of cautions did not reach the threshold required to trigger a financial penalty under the applicable tournament regulations.
According to the information provided, FIFA has confirmed that Sundowns have no outstanding booking issues ahead of the next stage of the competition. The development will come as a relief to the South African champions as they continue their campaign on the international stage.
Under the stated regulations, a team can be fined USD 10,000 for each yellow card if five or more players are cautioned in a single match. With only three Sundowns players receiving bookings against Al Ahli, the club avoided what could have been a significant financial penalty.
There is also encouraging news regarding Mokoena and Leon, with their previous yellow cards wiped from their disciplinary record. The cautions received against Al Ahli are also expected to be cancelled after Match 3 of the Intercontinental Cup, giving Sundowns greater clarity over their disciplinary situation.
Attention will now shift towards the Challenger Cup, scheduled for December, where Sundowns are expected to face the winner of the Derby of the Americas in Match 4.
The fixture will provide another opportunity for Sundowns to test themselves against international opposition and showcase the quality of South African football on a global platform.
With the booking concerns resolved, Sundowns can now concentrate fully on their preparations and maintaining their strong competitive standards as they continue their FIFA Intercontinental Cup journey.
