Kaizer Chiefs Fall Eight Points Behind Orlando Pirates Despite Unbeaten Start

Kaizer Chiefs’ unbeaten beginning to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign has been overshadowed by their inability to turn draws into victories, allowing Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns to establish an advantage in the battle for the league title.

Amakhosi have played eight league matches without suffering defeat, registering three wins and five draws to accumulate 14 points. However, their latest 1-1 stalemate against Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday, October 13, exposed their continued struggles to secure maximum points despite producing competitive performances.

Following the result, Chiefs found themselves eight points behind Orlando Pirates, who had earned 22 points from eight matches. Mamelodi Sundowns occupied the summit with 23 points, leaving the Soweto giants with considerable ground to recover.

Several draws have contributed to Chiefs’ position, including encounters against Stellenbosch, Golden Arrows, Polokwane City, Richards Bay and Sundowns. Although avoiding defeat reflects a degree of consistency, dropping points in these fixtures has prevented Amakhosi from keeping pace with their principal title rivals.

In the meeting with Stellenbosch, Sinoxolo Kwayiba opened the scoring for the visitors before Mduduzi Shabalala restored parity for Chiefs. Despite fighting back to level the contest, Amakhosi were unable to find a decisive goal and had to settle for another point.

The result underlines the need for improvements in several areas of the team’s performance. Greater efficiency in front of goal, improved attacking organisation and better decision-making during decisive moments could help Chiefs transform draws into wins.

The coaching staff must also ensure that substitutions have the desired impact and that the team maintains control when matches become difficult. Addressing these shortcomings will be essential if the club hopes to challenge for major honours this season.

Chiefs will next face a significant test when they meet Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby scheduled for October 31. The fixture offers Amakhosi an opportunity to reduce the points difference and gain momentum against their closest rivals.

Before that highly anticipated encounter, the team is expected to face Red Arrows in the CAF Confederation Cup, giving the players another opportunity to build confidence and improve their performance.

Although the campaign remains in its early stages, Chiefs cannot afford to continue dropping points if they want to remain genuine contenders. Their unbeaten record provides a foundation to build on, but consistent victories will be necessary to close the gap on Pirates and Sundowns.

For Amakhosi, the priority is clear: turn competitive displays into three-point results before the title race moves beyond their reach.
