Naturena: Former Pirates Defender Delivers Brutal Verdict On Chiefs Squad Depth After Soweto Derby
Kaizer Chiefs have received another dose of criticism following their Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates, with former Buccaneers defender Innocent Chikoya questioning the quality of the players available on the Amakhosi bench.
Chikoya believes the latest meeting between the two Soweto giants exposed an important weakness in the Chiefs squad, arguing that the club currently lacks sufficient depth to compete consistently against their biggest rivals.
The comments come after Orlando Pirates secured a 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs, ending their opponents' unbeaten run and claiming an important result in the Betway Premiership.
Although Chiefs showed determination during the encounter, the result has renewed discussions about the difference in squad quality between the two clubs.
According to Chikoya, the problem extends beyond the starting eleven, with the available substitutes also raising questions about whether Chiefs possess enough quality to change games when their preferred players are struggling.
The former Pirates left-back believes having a competitive starting lineup is not enough in modern football, particularly when teams are expected to compete across different competitions.
Squad depth becomes especially important during demanding periods when injuries, suspensions and fatigue force coaches to make adjustments.
For Chiefs, the concern is whether their current alternatives can maintain the same level of performance when first-choice players are unavailable or need to be replaced.
The Soweto Derby provided another opportunity to examine that issue, particularly as both technical teams attempted to influence the match through tactical adjustments.
While Pirates managed to secure all three points, Chiefs were left reflecting on another disappointing derby result.
The criticism also places additional attention on head coach Fernando Da Cruz and the club's recruitment strategy ahead of the January transfer window.
Da Cruz has previously emphasised that Chiefs do not intend to sign players simply to increase squad numbers, insisting that potential arrivals must bring genuine value to the team.
Chikoya's assessment could therefore strengthen the argument that Amakhosi need carefully targeted reinforcements rather than another large-scale recruitment exercise.
The club will need to identify positions where additional quality could improve competition for places and provide the coach with more reliable alternatives.
For supporters, the biggest concern remains whether Chiefs can close the gap on their rivals and build a squad capable of challenging consistently for major honours.
With the January transfer window approaching, questions about squad depth are likely to remain an important talking point at Naturena.
