Andile Ncube has praised Yanela Mbuthuma’s rise in South African football, expressing his belief that the young striker was always destined to play for a major club such as Orlando Pirates. His comments have drawn attention to the forward’s development and the challenges he continues to face as he establishes himself at the highest level.
Ncube believes Mbuthuma’s qualities were evident long before his move to the Soweto giants. According to him, the striker consistently stood out during his time at Richards Bay, where his performances suggested that he had the potential to compete for a bigger team.
“Yanela Mbuthuma was made to play for a big club like Orlando Pirates,” Ncube said, emphasising his confidence in the forward’s ability and long-term prospects.
The football enthusiast also highlighted the importance of having experienced players around Mbuthuma as he continues to develop. Playing for a club with the expectations and pressure associated with Orlando Pirates can be demanding, particularly for a young striker who is still adapting to the responsibilities of representing one of South Africa’s biggest football institutions.
Ncube recalled watching Mbuthuma during his time at Richards Bay and becoming convinced that the forward would eventually move to a more prominent club. He explained that the youngster was one of the players who immediately attracted attention because of his importance to the team.
“I remember when I started seeing Yanela at Richards Bay and I said he’s not gonna last there because you could tell he’s made for a bigger team,” Ncube remarked.
He further described Mbuthuma as a player who stood out at Richards Bay, suggesting that his influence on the team made it difficult to overlook his potential. His eventual move to Orlando Pirates has since provided him with an opportunity to test himself in a more competitive environment.
Mbuthuma’s progress has also been accompanied by international recognition, with Bafana Bafana call-ups adding another significant milestone to his career. However, his position in the Orlando Pirates starting lineup has reportedly attracted questions from some observers who remain uncertain about whether he should be starting matches regularly.
Despite the criticism, Ncube’s assessment reflects confidence in the striker’s ability to grow with the right guidance and support. Experienced teammates could play an important role in helping him improve his decision-making, confidence and consistency.
For Mbuthuma, the challenge now is to turn his potential into sustained performances. His journey from Richards Bay to Orlando Pirates and the national team spotlight demonstrates the progress he has made, while the expectations surrounding him underline the work still required to establish himself as a dependable forward.
