Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has called for Manchester City to face significant punishment if the club is found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations, arguing that the consequences could extend beyond the club itself.
Speaking on *The Overlap*, Gerrard said he was not seeking a Premier League winners’ medal and had accepted that he never won the competition during his playing career.
The former England international famously came close to winning the title with Liverpool during the 2013/14 season, when the club’s challenge faltered after his costly slip against Chelsea.
Gerrard acknowledged that Manchester City supporters and players would understandably want to preserve their memories of the club’s achievements. However, he questioned whether the potential consequences for other teams and their supporters should also be considered.
He argued that any proven breaches could have affected the competitive landscape over several seasons, potentially influencing the experiences of rival clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Everton, as well as teams competing near the bottom of the table and in domestic cup competitions.
Gerrard said everyone associated with Manchester City, including former and current players and the club’s ownership, should consider the possible impact on other football supporters if wrongdoing is established.
Manchester City have denied wrongdoing in relation to the Premier League charges. Any sporting sanctions would depend on the outcome of the proceedings and the applicable rules.
