Former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Percy Tau has been spotted training individually as he continues his search for a new club. The former Bafana Bafana international is currently a free agent, with uncertainty surrounding his next destination and whether he can still compete at the highest level of South African football.
Tau remains one of South Africa’s most recognisable footballers, having enjoyed considerable success both locally and internationally. His technical ability, creativity, movement and experience have earned him a strong reputation among football supporters.
The forward enjoyed a remarkable spell at Mamelodi Sundowns, particularly during the 2017/18 season, when he played a crucial role in the club’s campaign. His outstanding performances earned him the Premier Soccer League Footballer of the Season award, cementing his status as one of the country's top talents.
His success in South Africa opened doors abroad, with Tau going on to play in England and Belgium before joining Egyptian giants Al Ahly. During his time in Egypt, he won several trophies and gained valuable experience competing at a high level.
However, his current free-agent status has left his future uncertain. Being spotted training alone suggests that he is working to maintain his fitness while waiting for a suitable opportunity to continue his professional career.
His situation has also sparked speculation about a possible return to the Premier Soccer League. Given his experience and achievements, a move back to South Africa could attract interest from supporters and potentially interested clubs.
Nevertheless, several factors would determine whether Tau could make a significant impact, including his physical condition, current form and the expectations of any club willing to sign him.
For now, no club has been confirmed as his next destination. The experienced attacker will need to assess the available opportunities before deciding on the next step in his career.
The big question is whether Percy Tau can rediscover his best form and compete at the highest level of the PSL if he returns to South African football.
