Orlando Pirates have suffered another setback in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) after being held to a 1-1 draw by Kruger United, leaving the defending champions facing an uphill battle to catch league leaders Kaizer Chiefs.
The Buccaneers went into the encounter hoping to claim maximum points and improve their position on the standings. However, they were forced to settle for a draw, extending their disappointing start to the campaign.
The result leaves Pirates with just four points from their opening four matches, placing them eighth on the league table. They are now eight points behind Kaizer Chiefs, who have made an impressive start and established an early advantage in the title race.
Ayabulela Magidigidi scored for Orlando Pirates, while Thurston Phillips found the net for Kruger United to ensure the two sides shared the spoils.
For Pirates, the outcome will be frustrating, particularly as they aim to defend their championship. Their inability to consistently secure victories has left them trailing their rivals at a crucial stage of the season.
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs will be encouraged by their growing advantage over their Soweto rivals. The gap puts additional pressure on Pirates to improve their performances and string together a series of wins.
Despite the difficult start, the Buccaneers still have time to revive their campaign. However, they will need to address their shortcomings, improve their consistency and take their scoring opportunities if they hope to return to the top of the standings.
Pirates' technical team will now be expected to identify areas requiring improvement ahead of their next fixture. With the title defence already facing an early challenge, dropping more points could make their pursuit of Chiefs increasingly difficult.
