Mochudi Center Chiefs, coached by Reneilwe Letsholonyane, a former midfielder for Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana, are off to a winning start in the Botswana Premier League. On Saturday, they defeated Enesia FC 2-1 away.
This was Mochudi Center Chiefs' second straight victory under coach Letsholonyane, better known as Yeye, and it gave them three crucial points. In the first six league matches played so far, the team has gone 3-0 with a pair of losses and a tie.
After a stint as an assistant coach for FC Platinum in Zimbabwe, where he shared the bench with fellow South African Thabo Senong, Letsholonyane was promoted to head coach in September.
In an effort to expand upon his prior expertise and solidify his position as a coach, the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder has commenced his most recent coaching duty in Botswana.
Prior to their most recent win over Enesia FC, his squad won 2-1 against Township Rollers. The club has a chance to move up the standings thanks to recent victories, even though his first match in command resulted in a 2-0 loss to Tafic.
Mochudi Center Chiefs are now in fourth place in the league with ten points, four behind Tonata FC, thanks to their win over Enesia. As the league campaign progresses, this result maintains them in striking distance of the clubs ahead of them.
The away team got off to a good start in their encounter against Enesia, and they went ahead just before halftime. With a goal by Nicolas Melgarejo in the 42nd minute, Mochudi Center Chiefs took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Attempting to increase their lead and solidify their prospects of obtaining an away win, Letsholonyane's squad persisted in pressing forward following the restart.
Their hard work was rewarded in the 68th minute as Ronaldo Fortune doubled the lead. In the dying moments of the match, the goal gave the away team a commanding lead.
But Enesia kept fighting and, in the 85th minute, Thapelo Thebeyagae scored to cut the lead. As the home team sought an equaliser, Mochudi Center Chiefs were put under more strain by the late goal.
Staying ahead until the final whistle, Letsholonyane's team secured another crucial result for their league campaign, even if they were challenged late in the game.
With this most recent triumph, Letsholonyane's coaching resume in Botswana grows even longer. He had before assisted Matebele FC in maintaining their position in the country's premier league. During that time, he also received a nomination for Coach of the Season for his contributions.
Letsholonyane is attempting to channel his on-field expertise into off-field success as a former footballer for Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana.
As the season progresses, the coach and team will take heart from the two wins in a row. The next few matches will be crucial for Mochudi Center Chiefs as they aim to keep their consistency and get more points to move up to fourth place.
