South African defender Siyabonga Ngezana has taken an important step towards returning to action after resuming training with Romanian club FCSB following several months on the sidelines due to a knee injury.
The 29-year-old centre-back has been unavailable since undergoing surgery in June and has yet to make an appearance for FCSB this season. His return to training offers encouragement for both the player and the club as he works towards regaining full fitness.
Ngezana sustained the injury during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He initially delayed surgery in the hope of remaining available for selection for Bafana Bafana's World Cup squad. However, he eventually missed out on selection and had to concentrate on his rehabilitation.
The defender has missed 11 matches for FCSB this season, making his return to the training ground a significant development. While he still needs time to rebuild his fitness and match sharpness, the latest progress brings him closer to a competitive comeback.
Ngezana joined FCSB from Kaizer Chiefs three years ago and has made 106 appearances for the Romanian club. His performances have helped him establish himself as one of South Africa's notable defenders playing abroad.
However, returning to the Bafana Bafana setup could prove challenging because of increased competition for places in central defence. Several players are competing for opportunities, including Ime Okon, Olwethu Makhanya, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Khulumani Ndamane, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Lebone Seema. Thabo Moloisane, Malibongwe Khoza and Tylon Smith are also among the defenders hoping to impress the national team technical staff.
Ngezana has earned 14 international caps and will need to regain his best form at club level before mounting a serious challenge for an international recall. Consistent performances after his recovery will be crucial to rebuilding his position in the national team.
Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana are preparing for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Kenya. South Africa are scheduled to host the first leg at Orlando Stadium on Friday, 13 November, before travelling to Nairobi for the return match on Tuesday, 17 November.
For now, Ngezana's priority will be completing his recovery and returning to competitive football. A successful comeback at FCSB could provide the foundation for another opportunity to represent South Africa.
