Paris Saint-Germain’s emphatic UEFA Champions League victory over Manchester City has intensified speculation about a potential showdown with Mamelodi Sundowns in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup later this year.
PSG delivered a statement of intent with a 4-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium, producing an impressive attacking display against the English giants. Desiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha helped the French champions establish a strong first-half advantage before Manchester City attempted to fight back after the break.
Erling Haaland pulled one goal back for City, but Maghnes Akliouche quickly restored PSG’s advantage. Although City found the net again late in the contest, PSG held on to secure a convincing result and underline their status as one of Europe’s leading sides.
The result has caught the attention of Mamelodi Sundowns supporters because the South African champions could potentially face PSG in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final in December.
Sundowns earned their place in the next stage of the competition after defeating Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli to win the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup. Their victory secured qualification for the Challenger Cup, where they must continue their campaign before any potential meeting with PSG can become reality.
Sundowns defender Lovers Mohlala believes the Brazilians should not be intimidated by the prospect of facing Europe’s elite. He pointed to their performances at the FIFA Club World Cup as evidence that they are capable of competing against high-level opposition.
Mohlala stressed that football can be unpredictable and that success often depends on avoiding costly mistakes while taking advantage of opportunities.
However, he urged supporters to remain patient and avoid getting carried away by talk of a PSG final. Sundowns must first overcome their next challenge before thinking about a possible European showdown.
For now, the Brazilians remain focused on progressing through the Challenger Cup. Only if they successfully navigate that stage will they have the opportunity to test themselves against PSG and potentially produce another memorable chapter in South African football.
