Orlando Pirates Target Strong Start Against African Stars in CAF Champions League
Orlando Pirates are preparing for a crucial CAF Champions League encounter against Namibian champions African Stars as they look to secure a positive result in the first leg of their second preliminary-round tie.
The Buccaneers will face African Stars on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00. Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will be hoping his players deliver a disciplined performance and establish an advantage ahead of the return leg.
Pirates will be particularly determined to avoid another disappointing continental campaign after their hopes of reaching the group stage were ended by DR Congo's Saint Eloi Lupopo last season.
On that occasion, the Soweto giants suffered a 3-0 defeat in the first leg before producing an impressive response by winning the return encounter by the same scoreline. However, their comeback ultimately proved insufficient, as they lost the decisive penalty shootout and missed out on qualification.
That experience will serve as a reminder of the importance of securing a strong result in the opening match of a two-legged contest.
According to The South African, Ouaddou could make several changes to his starting lineup, although the predicted selection has not been officially confirmed by the club.
Sipho Chaine is expected to start in goal, with Bulelani Sigomoshe, captain Nkosinathi Sibisi, Lebone Seema and Nkosikhona Ndaba tipped to form the defensive line.
In midfield, Thapelo Mokobodi, Mthetheli Mthiyane and Simphiwe Masilela could be tasked with controlling possession and supporting the team's attacking transitions.
Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi and Boitumelo Radiopane are predicted to lead the attack, where their creativity, movement and finishing could prove decisive.
African Stars, meanwhile, will be eager to challenge the South African giants and take advantage of playing the opening leg.
For Pirates, concentration, defensive discipline and clinical finishing will be essential. A positive result in Gaborone would strengthen their position before the return fixture and bring them closer to securing a place in the CAF Champions League group stage.
