Mamelodi Sundowns have been handed a potential injury setback after midfielder Teboho Mokoena was forced off during their CAF Champions League encounter against Wiliete SC on Sunday, raising concerns about his availability for the team's upcoming fixtures.
The South African champions were held to a goalless draw by the Angolan side, but Mokoena's early substitution became one of the biggest talking points following the match. The midfielder appeared to experience discomfort in an area affected by a previous ligament injury sustained while representing Bafana Bafana.
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso expressed concern about the situation, admitting that the club was still waiting for medical examinations to determine the seriousness of the problem.
Speaking after the match, Cardoso explained that Mokoena appeared to have suffered another setback involving the same ligament that had previously caused him problems during his time with the national team.
"It is a little bit of a touch on the ligament that was hurt during his time with the national team," the Portuguese coach said.
Cardoso acknowledged that the club did not yet know the full extent of the injury, explaining that the midfielder could not continue playing because of the discomfort.
"At the moment we don't have the extent of the injury, but he could not continue in the match," he added.
The coach confirmed that Mokoena would undergo medical examinations to establish the seriousness of the problem and determine whether he could recover in time for Sundowns' next match.
"Tomorrow he will be subjected to exams," Cardoso stated, before expressing hope that the injury would not be serious enough to sideline the midfielder for an extended period.
"So let's hope it is not a big thing and we can recover him for the next match," he added.
Mokoena remains an important figure in the Sundowns midfield because of his ability to win possession, distribute the ball effectively and provide defensive stability. His experience and international quality also make him a valuable asset for Bafana Bafana.
For now, Sundowns will have to wait for the medical results before determining their next move. Supporters will be hoping that the midfielder has avoided a serious injury, although no confirmed recovery timeline has been provided.
