Neil Tovey Sends Clear Message to Kaizer Chiefs Fans Over Fernando Da Cruz
Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Neil Tovey has urged Amakhosi supporters to remain patient with head coach Fernando Da Cruz while also challenging the team to become more ambitious in their pursuit of victories.
Chiefs have made an unbeaten start to their Betway Premiership campaign, providing some encouragement under their new coach. However, the number of draws has prevented the Soweto giants from collecting as many points as they would have liked.
Tovey believes Chiefs must be prepared to take more calculated risks in matches where victory is within their reach. According to the former captain, collecting maximum points should be a greater priority than simply protecting an unbeaten record.
“I’d rather have one loss and three wins than four draws,” Tovey said.
His comments highlight the difference between remaining unbeaten and making meaningful progress on the league table. Four draws would give a team just four points, while three wins and one defeat would produce nine points from the same four matches.
For Chiefs, converting some of their draws into victories could therefore make a significant difference as they attempt to compete with the leading sides in the Premiership.
However, Tovey's call for greater ambition does not mean he wants Da Cruz to abandon defensive discipline or become reckless. Instead, the former Chiefs captain appears to want the players to show more confidence and aggression when opportunities to win games present themselves.
At the same time, Tovey has stressed the importance of giving Da Cruz sufficient time to build his team and implement his ideas. With the season still in its early stages, the coach should not be judged solely on a handful of results.
Da Cruz will now be expected to find the right balance between attacking intent and defensive stability. If Chiefs can turn more of their positive performances into victories, their position on the table could improve considerably.
For the Amakhosi faithful, Tovey's message is clear: an unbeaten start is encouraging, but victories are ultimately what will determine whether Chiefs can challenge for major honours this season.
