Kaizer Chiefs defender Bradley Cross has been in strong form this season, raising questions about whether his performances could earn him a place in Bafana Bafana’s squad for AFCON 2025.
The 24-year-old left-back, who joined Chiefs from Golden Arrows last season, has become a regular starter under coaches Khalil Ben Youseff and Cedric Kazer. His consistency has caught the attention of national selectors.
Cross was recently included in coach Hugo Broos’ preliminary squad for the continental tournament. Although he has yet to make his debut for the senior national team, his progress has been noted.
Former coach Tony Dias, who worked with Cross at Mpumalanga Black Aces, praised his development. Dias highlighted how the player was successfully transitioned from an attacking role to defense at a young age, which has shaped his versatility.
Dias added that Cross’ recognition at national level reflects positively on the development structures that nurtured him. He emphasized that seeing players progress into professional football is the ultimate goal for clubs like Aces.
This season, Cross has already featured in 13 matches for Chiefs, competing against experienced players such as Paseka Mako and Nkhayisa Shinga for the left-back position. His ability to hold down the role has strengthened his case for national selection.
Despite his form, Broos is expected to favor Samukele Kabini and Aubrey Modiba in the final squad. However, an injury to either could open the door for Cross to make the cut and represent South Africa at AFCON 2025.
Bradley Cross’ strong performances for Kaizer Chiefs have put him in contention for AFCON 2025, though competition for the left-back spot remains tough. His inclusion in the preliminary squad shows recognition of his growth, with a final call-up depending on squad dynamics and possible injuries.
