Monnapule Saleng has taken an important step towards rebuilding his career at Mamelodi Sundowns after making his long-awaited return to competitive football. The winger came on as a substitute during Sundowns' 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Cup on Tuesday night, marking his first appearance since March.
Siyanda Ndlovu scored the decisive goal in the first half to secure the victory for the Brazilians. However, Saleng's return to the pitch attracted considerable attention, with supporters eager to see whether he can rediscover his best form.
The former Orlando Pirates attacker has endured a challenging period since joining Sundowns, with questions surrounding his position in the squad and his ability to meet the expectations of the technical team. Nevertheless, coach Miguel Cardoso's decision to introduce him suggests that he could still have a role to play in the team's plans.
Saleng previously established himself as one of the Premier Soccer League's most dangerous attacking players at Orlando Pirates. His ability to beat defenders, create scoring opportunities and deliver dangerous crosses made him a key figure for the Buccaneers.
Sundowns will hope he can reproduce those performances and strengthen their attacking options as they compete across multiple competitions.
However, Saleng still has work to do before securing a regular place in the starting line-up. Improving his match fitness, maintaining consistency in training and taking advantage of future opportunities will be crucial.
His appearance could mark the beginning of a fresh chapter at Chloorkop, although only his performances in the coming matches will determine whether he can establish himself in the team.
Do you think Saleng deserves more playing time at Mamelodi Sundowns, or does he still need to prove himself?
