Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained why his touchline behaviour differs from that of his predecessor, Jose Riveiro, following the Buccaneers' 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United on Saturday.
Ouaddou has attracted attention for his animated reactions during matches, regularly showing his emotions as he communicates instructions to his players. His approach has drawn comparisons with Riveiro, who was often regarded as having a calmer presence on the touchline during his time at the Soweto club.
However, the current Pirates coach has made it clear that he has his own personality and coaching methods, suggesting that supporters should not expect him to behave in the same manner as the Spanish tactician.
The comments came after Pirates secured their place in the Carling Knockout semi-finals by overcoming Sekhukhune in a closely contested quarter-final.
Mpho Padime scored the decisive goal, ensuring that the defending champions continued their pursuit of another cup triumph.
Despite the victory, Ouaddou remained visibly involved throughout the encounter, reacting to events on the pitch and constantly communicating with his players.
His touchline conduct has become one of the noticeable features of his early period in charge, particularly when Pirates are involved in demanding fixtures.
The comparison with Riveiro is understandable given the Spaniard's previous success with the club. However, Ouaddou appears determined to establish his own identity rather than imitate the coaching style of his predecessor.
For Pirates, the most important task remains translating their performances into positive results while maintaining their ambitions in domestic competitions.
